25 years of European Landscape convention

The European Landscape Convention (ELC) has been shaping policy and practice for 25 years. But how has this overarching European framework influenced landscapes and daily life across the continent? What tangible changes have occurred for people—whether walking city streets, living near forests, working farms, or traveling as tourists? How has this European-scale policy been reflected in local communities? Are there noticeable links between the Convention’s broad ambitions and its real-world impact? How can landscape be used as a mediator between the physical environmental challenges and the societal ones?

The Journal of European Landscapes invites submissions for a special issue exploring these questions and more. As an open-access, online journal, we welcome diverse perspectives and innovative approaches on the effects of the ELC over the past quarter-century.

We are particularly interested in:

  • Research articles examining how the Landscape Convention has affected everyday life and landscapes across Europe, including its impact on local communities, public spaces, and individual experiences. For example on connecting environmental and societal aspects of landscape trough policy;
  • Project descriptions of transnational initiatives focused on European landscapes, with an emphasis on the role and participation of local communities;
  • Book reviews reflecting on publications related to the European Landscape Convention and its influence;
  • Interviews with prominent landscape experts, particularly those discussing the long-term implications of the Convention;
  • Other contributions that offer unique insights or perspectives on the subject.

Important Dates:

  • November 15, 2024 – Call for Papers opens
  • December 15, 2024 – Abstract submissions due
  • January 15, 2025 – Feedback on abstracts
  • April 15, 2025 – Full paper submissions due
  • October 20, 2025 – Special Issue publication

We look forward to your contributions to this important reflection on the European Landscape Convention and its impact on the landscapes and people in Europe. For more information, please contact JEL editor dr. Arjan Conijn or guest editor prof. Saša Dobričić.
